DESCRIPTION:Whole Washington is coming to Downtown Vancouver\, Washington in Clark County for a Town Hall event!  We have been visiting every corner of the state to create spaces for open dialog about the failures of our current for-profit healthcare system\, to solicit stories from those impacted by the lack of adequate nurse staffing\, hospital and provider closures\, challenges of navigating insurance coverage and denials\, or surprise bills and financial debt. This is a non-partisan\, educational event – open to the public.  Everyone has a story and we want to hear yours.  We will also provide highlights regarding how the Washington Health Trust will resolve or begin to resolve your issues. and answer your questions. \nWe believe we can do better by establishing the Washington Health Trust and designing a nonprofit system that works for patients and providers\, without the corrupting influence of for-profit insurance companies. DESCRIPTION:We\, the Health Care Is a Human Right WA coalition\, made up of 40 organizations\, are united in our demand: No cuts to essential services and no balancing of the budget on the backs of the vulnerable. We are committed to ensuring that health care is a fundamental right\, not a privilege reserved for the wealthy. The ongoing budget cuts and delays in achieving universal coverage are harming our community.\nImpact of Cuts. \nThe federal cuts have already begun to hit hard. Many of Washington’s programs\, such as Medicaid\, cancer screenings\, and other vital services\, are funded by the federal government. As these programs face significant reductions or potential loss\, we need to strengthen our state’s ability to fund and sustain these services independently. We cannot afford to rely on a federal government that continues to prioritize the wealthy over the needs of its citizens. \nIncreasing Revenue\nWashington needs to support itself and build a sustainable\, equitable future. This includes revisiting tax breaks for big businesses and ensuring that those who can afford to contribute more do so\, so that the burden of essential services does not fall solely on the poor and middle class. \nFeatured Speakers include: \n\nPatty Kuderer Washington’s Insurance Commissioner\, will speak to the critical need for universal health coverage\, highlight the importance of achieving single-payer uhc reform at the state level\, how we can get there\, how advocates can support that goal\, and the impact of the threatened Federal Medicaid cuts on our reform efforts in WA.\nVicki Lowe\, Executive Director of the American Indian Health Commission of WA. The cuts to both federal and state budgets disproportionately harm Native Americans who already face significant healthcare challenges. Dismantling of federal agencies.\n\nThese communities must not be further neglected in the push for budgetary cuts. There will be time at the end of the hour for attendees to share their stories. Register here.\nIndicate on RSVP form virtual attendance to receive Zoom link.\nShare this information with interested union members/leaders! \n\nThe labor movement has a proud history of winning good health care benefits for union members and our families\, including Taft-Hartley multi-employer plans. Labor also played a central role in winning the Medicare and Medicaid programs for seniors\, the disabled and low-income Americans. And yet today these gains are seriously eroding. Close to 100 million Americans either have no health coverage or are so underinsured that they cannot afford to use their insurance. Medical debt accounts for a majority of personal bankruptcies. The escalating costs of health care have caused bitter strikes and have forced many unions to forego fair wage increases while more and more healthcare costs have shifted onto the backs of workers. The COVID pandemic drove home the peril of tying health benefits to employment. And while healthcare costs in our country’s for-profit system are the highest in the world\, we rank 28th in infant mortality and 24th in life expectancy. Ours is the only industrialized country that does not guarantee comprehensive health care to all its people. And now many of the gains we have made are being threatened by the political winds blowing from Washington\, DC. \n\nWhat can the labor movement do to protect and improve the gains we have made in health care? How can we help make access to health care a guaranteed right of all Americans? Rose Roach will present a clear explanation of how these challenges could be met if we take health care off the bargaining table and instead establish a universal\, publicly-funded and administered health program at the national level – or at the state level to pave the way to a national plan. Presenters from our state will share a current legislative proposal for a universal state plan as well as related resolutions that have recently been adopted by a number of WA state labor organizations. There will be plenty of time for discussion in small groups. \n  \nPlease join us. We know there are different viewpoints in the labor movement about health care. Come with your questions!
