Universal healthcare
is pro labor
It's time to tell the bosses that healthcare is non-negotiable. Workers deserve coverage even between jobs, while seeking an education, or going on strike.
Labor is at the table and working with Whole Washington to win universal healthcare for our state. Our collaborations have included labor summits, passing resolutions through the Washington State Labor Convention, and joining in coalition through Health Care is a Human Right Washington. If you are an active member in your labor union please get involved!
Does labor support universal healthcare?
Yes! Like with any issue workers and unions are not of one opinion, there is strong recognition that universal healthcare protects workers whether they are between jobs, pursuing an education, or on strike. While unions have fought hard for their healthcare benefits, universal healthcare secures those benefits for all workers for the long haul.
Washington State Labor Council Universal Healthcare Resolution (2025.02)
The Washington State Labor Council (WSLC) passed a statewide resolution in support of pursing universal single-payer healthcare for Washington.
Cosponsoring unions included AFT WA, APALA Seattle, IAM 751, Kitsap CLC, MLK Labor, Pride At Work WA (AFL-CIO), Puget Sound Advocates for Retirement Action, Retired Public Employees Council of WA, Thurston Lewis Mason CLC, Twin Harbors CLC, UAW 4121, WA Education Association, WFSE/SFSCME Council 28, WFSE Local 443.
The resolution was passed nearly unanimously with only one vote in opposition. This critical resolution goes beyond endorsing the values of universal healthcare or federal legislation and allows Washington’s organized labor movement to push its state legislature to pass a statewide implementation.
Labor Campaign for Single Payer
Whole Washington is a proud partner of the Labor Campaign for Single Payer, a national organization based in Minneapolis working to build union support for universal single-payer healthcare across the United States.
In-state dues-paying affiliates include Washington Federation of State Employees (WFSE-AFSCME/AFL-CIO), Local 443, and the Kitsap and Thurston-Lewis-Mason CLC. All unions are encouraged to join!
